How a Personal Alarm Can Keep Your Children Safe from Predators

I remember one of my favorite treats in the hot muggy days of a northern Ohio summer was getting something from an ice cream vendor who came around in his brightly colored truck, bells ringing, music blaring, high prices–AHHHHH the good old days. To me and millions of my fellow kids it was part of Americana.

Those ice cream trucks are still making the rounds all these years later only now with a little twist for some. There was a story recently that revealed the driver of one of those trucks was a convicted sex offender.

As far as I could find there are over 600,000 convicted sex offenders on the loose in the U.S. That doesn’t count the ones who will soon be released after serving their sentence. Yes they have served their time but statistics show they don’t get it and will strike again.

Only about ten states even have laws on controlling them once they are released and those laws vary all over the place. Do you know what the laws are in your state? Does your state require convicted sex offenders to register?

Most states that do require registration only require it for where they live not where they work. Enter the ice cream truck problem. SCARY EH?

This stuff happens all the time all over the country. Recently in a small town in Florida a child was approached by a stranger as she was leaving the school library. Only her loud yells drew attention to the pervert forcing his escape. He was later caught-an ex offender looking for a new victim.

What can you do to keep your kids safe?

As parents there are many things you can teach your kids to help keep them safe including:

FRONT DOOR. Never let them answer the door alone even when you are home.

PHONE. If they answer, teach your kids to never say they are alone. Say parents are not available, take a message and hang up.

911. Teach them your address and how to dial 911 even as young as two or three. Kids learn very fast at that age.

SECRET WORD Predators use all sorts of sneaky ways to get kids to go with them. Some families have developed this secret word as a way to overcome a common ruse of “your mom asked me to get you and bring you home.” If that person doesn’t know the secret word, never go with them.

PERSONAL ALARM. Get your kids a personal alarm and teach them how to use it. Noise may be the best deterrent in an emergency situation. Perverts don’t like the attention an alarm can bring. They are easy to use and inexpensive as can be. The Electronic Pocket Whistle or MACE Brand ‘Screecher’ are perfect alarms for kids

Follow these tips and you and your kids can feel safer knowing how to avoid trouble and what to do if they are in trouble.
